Lower back pain, neck stiffness, numb hands, dizziness, bone spurs... Many people suffer from lumbar and cervical spine issues. The cervical spine is particularly concerning; once affected by spinal cord-type cervical spondylosis, it not only impacts daily life but can severely hinder self-care capabilities.

The aging process of the cervical and lumbar spine progresses through 5 stages. Compare your symptoms with the descriptions below to see which stage you are in.

Stage 1: Discomfort, Pain, and Fatigue

Do you feel soreness and discomfort in your neck and lower back after long periods of sitting or desk work? Do you sometimes hesitate to bend over when brushing your teeth or washing your face in the morning?

These symptoms may signal fatigue in the muscles and fascia of your cervical and lumbar spine. If pressing on acupuncture points like "Jianjing" (GB21) on both sides of the neck, the inner scapula, or the upper outer buttocks causes noticeable pain, it indicates that your spinal muscles and fascia are already in a state of fatigue.

Stage 2: Postural Changes and Stiffness

When the cervical and lumbar spine are maintained in abnormal positions for prolonged periods, the natural forward-curving physiological curvature gradually straightens, and you may feel unusual stiffness in the neck and lower back. Sometimes, a noticeable bump appears at the back of the neck, especially when looking down. This indicates you have entered the second stage. Commonly heard terms like "loss of cervical lordosis" or "cervical kyphosis" belong to this stage.

If you find it more comfortable to maintain a forward-head, hunched posture, and consciously correcting to a proper posture feels uncomfortable, it suggests you are at this stage.

Stage 3: Dizziness, Tinnitus, and Brain Fog

The spine is composed of 24 vertebrae stacked together, with intervertebral discs acting as cushions between them. These elastic discs absorb shock, maintain spacing, and stabilize the spine. However, as the spine ages, disc height decreases, leading to spinal instability. When you bend your neck or lower back, the shifting vertebrae may irritate blood vessels supplying the brain, causing temporary insufficient cerebral blood flow and resulting in dizziness. If you experience dizziness when turning your head, looking back, or tilting your head backward, you have likely reached the third stage. This stage is often accompanied by disc bulging.

Stage 4: Numbness and Radiating Pain in Limbs

Prolonged forward-head posture or frequent bending can easily lead to disc bulging or even herniation. If the herniated disc compresses a nerve, it can cause clear radiating pain in the upper limbs, hand numbness, or leg numbness and weakness.

Stage 5: Clumsiness and Unsteady Gait

As the spine becomes increasingly unstable, the body tries everything to stabilize it, most commonly by growing bone spurs. If these bone spurs compress the spinal cord, the most severe outcome can occur: limb weakness or even paralysis. If you feel your movements becoming increasingly "clumsy"-for example, struggling to button clothes with one hand, unable to hold a bowl steadily, handwriting becoming larger, or walking feeling unsteady-it indicates you have reached the fifth and most severe stage of spinal aging.

Never neglect your physical health. Your body is the foundation of everything you do. Prioritize the health of your cervical and lumbar spine, starting with prevention!
